People on the trail

In the year 1843 a lot of people came to Independence. They wanted to go to Oregon. They had heard there was farmland there. Oregon is 2000 miles away from Independence. From here the people (called by pioneers) went on in groups. They travelled in wagons across the country. The wagons were pulled by oxen. The people needed great courage, because the trip was very hard and dangerous. They could only go about 15 miles a day. There were no roads and bridges and no doctors and hospitals.

Before the jouney started

A day before the journey started the pioneers had to do all kinds of things. They had to check the wagons, buy food and tools. The children helped their parents. They packed boxes into the wagons, repaired wagon wheels and fed the oxen.

During the journey

Sometimes a wagon wheel broke and they had to repair it quickly. Sometimes there were thunderstorms and the oxen ran away. Many of the pioneers especially the children became ill and some of them died. When they died they buried them on the trail. They had to cross rivers and the Rocky Mountains. When they came to the mountains the oxen were tired, so they threw away a lot of things, because the wagons were too heavy for the oxen. Sometimes the pioneers met Indians. They needed fresh food, so they traded with them. When they finally reached Oregon in winter they built huts and waited for the spring.
